Bryan Endres and Jonathan Coppess\, will explore the pandemic’s impact on the legal enforceability of agricultural contracts\, protections afforded under commodity specific statutes such as the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act and the Packers and Stockyards Act\, regulatory compliance issues with potential large-scale euthanasia of livestock\, state-level meat inspection laws\, application of the Defense Production Act in the agricultural context\, and a new generation of farm foreclosure moratorium laws. There will also be an update on additional relief measures\, payment limits and current policy discussions at the federal level.

SUMMARY:The Impact of the Coronavirus Pandemic on Food Prices and  Retail Food Sector
DESCRIPTION:The retail food sector has been put under substantial stress by the coronavirus pandemic. What started out with runs on toilet paper quickly escalated to empty meat and bread aisles at grocery stores. Scott Irwin will join Jayson Lusk of Purdue University to discuss the how the pandemic has impacted food prices and logistical issues in this crucial sector of the American economy. \nJayson Lusk currently serves as Distinguished Professor and Head of the Agricultural Economics Department at Purdue University.  After earning a B.S. in Food Technology from Texas Tech University in 1997\, he received a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Kansas State University in 2000.  He is a food and agricultural economist who studies what we eat and why we eat it. Since 2000\, he has published more than 220 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals on a wide assortment of topics ranging from the economics of animal welfare to consumer preferences for genetically modified food to the impacts of new technologies and policies on livestock and meat markets to analyzing the merits of new survey and experimental approaches eliciting consumer preferences.  He is one of the most prolific and cited food and agricultural economists of the past two decades in a variety of outlets\, won numerous research awards\, given hundreds of lectures for businesses\, nonprofits\, trade industry organizations\, and universities in the US and abroad\, have been interviewed or published editorials in outlets such as the New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, the Washington Post\, and have made TV appearances on Fox and Friends\, the John Stossel Show\, Varney & Co.\, and Wall Street Journal Live\, among others.

Scott will provide a brief overview of recent grain market developments and Jeff will then provide an overview of crop input supply and logistic issues. \nJeff received his B.S.\, M. S.\, and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois. After receiving his Master’s degree\, he accepted a job with American Cyanamid as a Technical Service Representative in West Central Illinois. After completing his Ph.D.\, Jeff joined GROWMARK and has been with them for 15 years\, holding various positions. Jeff has been in the Crop Protection Division since January of 2011. He is currently the Division Manager after spending 2 years in the role of Crop Protection Marketing Manager. \nJeff is an active member in the American Society of Agronomy\, CropLife America\, North Central Weed Science Society\, and Weed Science Society of America. As a member\, Jeff has served as the chair of the Professional Practitioners for the American Society of Agronomy as well as chair for the soybean section for the North Central Weed Science Society. Jeff has been a board member of the Southern Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association as well as holding the President position. Jeff was a graduate from the Illinois Agriculture Leadership Program in August 2014. Jeff currently serves on the Board of Directors\, Executive Committee\, and Strategic Oversight Committee for CropLife America. Jeff has recently joined the Board of Directors at FieldWatch.

He joined the Farmer Mac team in 2005\, and has worked in the strategy\, research\, credit\, and underwriting departments. Jackson is the lead author and creator of The Feed\, Farmer Mac’s quarterly publication on the agricultural sector\, and he regularly presents to lenders\, producers\, and industry experts throughout the year. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in economics from Centre College\, a Master’s degree in agricultural economics from Purdue University\, as well as a Master’s of Business Administration and a Master’s degree in finance from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. He has also been a CFA charterholder since 2012.
